Problem
The project's key challenge was to create a visual identity that would exceed the expectations and clichés that tend to follow projects in the classical music sphere. The Bureau's team aims to create innovative cultural events that break free from the confines of traditional concert halls, focusing on the multi-genre, interdisciplinary, and multimedia nature of the cultural product being created.
The Bureau is not just an orchestra, nor merely a community of academic musicians — it is also an educational platform, a venue for communication with audiences, and a new, technology-driven approach to managing cultural events. The visual identity needed to reflect the team's ambition, its focus on new audiences, and its commitment to experimentation.
Solution
One of the references the project team mentioned was an allusion to Brutalist architecture — concrete surfaces, a monochrome color palette, and simple, sharply cut geometric forms. It was precisely these suggestions that formed the basis of the brand's visual identity — simple shapes, a gray color scheme with touches of a bright red accent color, a focus on typography, and thoughtful use of textures.
The recurring visual motif of the visual identity is the inclusion of red spheres as a symbol of a constantly moving entity bringing momentum, brilliance and direction into an otherwise static landscape. The logo, with its hard geometric forms and a very deliberate use of color, becomes the distilled version of the broader visual language. It is built around the Cyrillic letter "Б" (from the word "Бюро"/"Bureau"), as the project can simply be referred to as the Bureau.
Outcome
Distinct visual identity and clear product positioning helped Bureau of New Music jump-start its journey and gain early traction both within the music community and among the broader audience. Mere months into its existence, the project had secured funds to build a spin-off brand for its first educational platform, named School of Baroque and Contemporary Music. The initial branding was adjusted to accommodate new goals, ideas, and principles under the same visual identity.
